Ntungamo District Chairperson Urges Farmers to Embrace Fish Farming

By Anthony Kushaba

Ntungamo District Chairperson Samuel Mucunguzi has called on farmers to embrace fish farming as a way to improve household incomes and ensure responsible use of wetlands.

Speaking at the district headquarters in Ntungamo Municipality during the handover of fish fingerlings and feeds to local farmers, Mucunguzi emphasized the growing demand for fish as a profitable opportunity for farmers. He noted that the district is committed to supporting farmers through the production department by providing inputs and extension services, depending on the availability of resources.

“The demand for fish is high, and adopting fish farming can help our farmers not only increase their income but also use wetlands in an environmentally responsible manner,” said Mucunguzi.

Amos Besigye, the Senior Fisheries Officer for Ntungamo District, highlighted the district’s favorable environment for fish farming. He revealed that the district distributed 6,766 catfish, 20,000 Nile tilapia fingerlings, and 1,500 kilograms of fish feeds to 20 farmers as part of its initiative to promote aquaculture.

One of the beneficiaries, Balam Twesigye, lauded the district for its timely support. “This initiative by the government is commendable and will go a long way in boosting fish farming in Ntungamo,” he said.
