Parents in Ntungamo District and across Uganda have been called upon to prioritize early childhood development to raise responsible and well-rounded citizens.
The appeal was made on Tuesday by Sharon Birungi, the Ntungamo District Clerk to Council and Town Clerk for Kagarama Town Council, while representing the Chief Administrative Officer at a training session for key stakeholders on integrated early childhood development. The event, held at the district council hall, brought together participants from Kagarama Town Council and Ntungamo Sub-County.
Birungi emphasized that a child's growth and development begin from conception and urged parents to take deliberate actions to support this critical stage. She highlighted that inadequate nutrition and care during early childhood have led to significant developmental challenges among children in the district.
"Parents need to understand that the foundation of a child's life starts from the womb," Birungi stated. "We must create awareness and ensure that parents are well-informed about the importance of proper feeding and nurturing."
Mercy Orikiriza from the district education department also addressed the gathering, revealing that the district is intensifying efforts to ensure early childhood development centers comply with Ministry of Education guidelines. These efforts include increased inspections and regular training for caregivers.
Participants at the training echoed the need for action. Jackline Kyomuhendo, one of the attendees, described the session as timely, citing a growing trend of parental neglect. "Most parents have abandoned their responsibilities, and it is high time we took serious steps to address this issue," she remarked.
The training attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including caregivers, headteachers, school management committee members, and religious leaders.
The initiative aims to equip these key players with the knowledge and skills necessary to champion early childhood development, ensuring a brighter future for children in Ntungamo and beyond.
