Ntungamo Kids Shine with Trophy at National Athletics

A wave of celebration swept through Ntungamo District on Sunday as a team of young athletes returned home from Tororo Municipality, proudly carrying a trophy and medals after excelling in sprints at the National Kids Athletics and Special Needs Championship.

The championship, held from May 3rd to May 12th, 2026, brought together pupils from across Uganda to showcase talent, discipline, and inclusivity in sports. Ntungamo was represented by 24 pupils competing across four categories:

·       Under 12 Boys – 6 athletes

·       Under 12 Girls – 6 athletes

·       Under 14 Boys – 6 athletes

·       Under 14 Girls – 6 athletes

The delegation was guided by respected education leaders, including Mercy Orikiriza, Senior Education Officer; Mukago Costance, Head Teacher at Iterero Primary School and Sports Coordinator; and Turyomunsi Grace, Head Teacher of Nyakashozi Primary School. Their mentorship inspired the pupils to perform at their best against peers from across the country.

Upon their triumphant return, the athletes were warmly received at the Ntungamo District Council Hall by Chief Administrative Officer Fedlis Kiiza, District Education Officer Ntare Denis, and other dignitaries. The function was marked by joy and pride as the community celebrated the children’s achievements.

Senior Education Officer Mercy Orikiriza praised the pupils for their discipline and outstanding performance during the championship.

Among the standout athletes was Mary Kamahanga, a pupil at Kabingo II Primary School, who won a silver medal in the Under-14 sprint category. Elijah Ankwatirire, from Kitunga Day and Boarding Primary School, clinched a gold medal in his category, further cementing Ntungamo’s reputation for nurturing young talent.

District Education Officer Ntare Denis commended the pupils for making both the district and the nation proud. He emphasized that the education department, together with district leaders, had provided moral and financial support to the team, enabling them to excel.

“Athletics and sports give pupils a full package of exposure, discipline, and confidence which are vital for their growth,” he noted, while challenging private schools in the district to embrace sporting activities.

Ntungamo District Local Council V Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigooba revealed that the success of Ntungamo’s athletes has ignited pride across the district, with leaders and residents alike celebrating the children’s achievements. He stressed that their victory not only highlights the district’s commitment to sports development but also sets a strong foundation for future participation in national and international competitions.

He further urged the athletes to uphold discipline and integrity, values he described as essential for success in sports and life.
