Local leaders in Ntungamo District on Friday launched construction works on the 9.1-kilometre Rwerazi Road in Rukoni West Sub-county, aimed at improving connectivity and easing access to markets. The project is expected to cost Shs 65 million.

Presiding over the launch, the Ntungamo District Local Government Chairperson, Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba, reaffirmed the district’s commitment to regularly maintaining roads as a key driver of economic development.

“We understand the importance of roads in linking our people to essential services and economic opportunities. Despite our expansive road network, we are working hard to secure more road equipment to improve service delivery,” Muchunguzi said, thanking the central government for its continued support.

The Chief Administrative Officer, Fedelis Kiiza, urged residents to cooperate with the project team to ensure smooth implementation. He expressed concern that some community members have previously blocked drainage offshoots, warning that such actions contribute to road erosion and reduce road durability.

Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner Isaiah Byarugaba Kanyamahane, who also attended the event, made a social appeal, urging couples to promote peace in their homes. “We have received concerns that some men are being harassed by their wives. Domestic harmony is essential for productivity and development,” he said.

Mwine Frank, the LCIII Chairperson of Rukoni West, applauded the district leadership for prioritizing road maintenance despite limited resources.

The acting District Engineer, Eng. Charles Kusemererwa, outlined the scope of work, which includes bush clearing, grading, spot murraming, drainage offshoots, and culvert installation. He confirmed that machinery had already been mobilized and the works would commence immediately.

The Rwerazi Road upgrade is expected to significantly improve transport and trade in the area, offering a much-needed boost to the local economy.
