Ntungamo Leaders Push for Extension of Safe Water to Rural Areas

Body:

Ntungamo district authorities have called for deliberate efforts by service providers to extend safe and clean water to rural communities and urban areas that remain underserved.

During the district water supply and sanitation coordination committee meeting held on June 17, 2026, in the district boardroom, leaders expressed concern that residents continue to trek long distances in search of clean water, losing valuable time that could be spent on productive activities.

Emilly Atuhaire, the secretary for works, water, and technical services—representing district chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigooba—highlighted that several parts of the district face acute water scarcity and require urgent intervention.

Gerald Niwagaba, the principal assistant secretary who represented the chief administrative officer, urged service providers to promptly inform communities whenever technical challenges disrupt water supply.

Philbert Bankunda, the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) area engineer for Ntungamo, revealed that efforts are underway to establish more water sources to expand coverage across the district.

Ntungamo district water officer Prosper Butubuura commended the government and development partners for the support in extending water to the locals and public institutions.

The meeting drew participation from heads of departments, Ntungamo district internal security officer Essau Nsimire, representatives from NWSC, the Southwestern Umbrella of Water and Sanitation, Rukungiri Women in Development Foundation, ACTS Uganda, and officials from the Ministry of Water and Environment.
