Authorities in Ntungamo district have suspended fishing activities at lake Nyakiyanja following the death of thousands of fish due to suspected poisoning.
According to Amos Besigye the Ntungamo district Fisheries officer, the decision was taken to ensure that the suspected poison which killed the fish does not extend to human beings.
Besigye says that the death of the fish has been attributed to the use of chemicals on the shores of the lake by some farmers.
He says that the chemical was later washed down into the lake’s breeding area killing thousands of fish adding that empty tins of a non-selective weed chemical were found around the lake.
Lake Nyakiyanja is located in Nyabihooko sub county –Ntungamo district.
