By Anthony Kushaba
Farmers from Kanyampumo in Nyabihoko Sub-county, Ntungamo District, have received specialized training in digital agricultural tools as part of a new initiative aimed at improving modern farming practices and increasing productivity.
The training, held today at Nyabihoko Cooperative Society, targeted 30 farmers who are registered members of the cooperative. It was conducted under the Ntungamo District Production Department in partnership with Sustainable Crop Production and PlantwisePlus.
According to officials, the program seeks to empower farmers with essential digital skills to access timely information on crop production, disease management, and best agricultural practices through internet-based platforms.
Speaking during the session, Ntungamo District Principal Agricultural Officer, Esther Atwiine, said digital tools are becoming an essential part of modern agriculture, helping farmers make informed decisions and adopt new technologies.
“This training is meant to help our farmers embrace modern ways of accessing agricultural knowledge,” Atwiine said. “With these digital tools, they can easily learn about crop diseases, proper management practices, and innovations that improve production.”
Farmers were introduced to a variety of digital platforms, including PlantwisePlus, PlantwisePlus Toolkit, CABI Bioprotection Portal, PlantwisePlus Knowledge Bank, and the CABI Academy.
One of the beneficiaries, Enid Kapson, said the training opened her eyes to the potential of digital farming. She noted that she previously used her phone mainly for calls and WhatsApp, but now realizes that digital applications offer a “bank of knowledge” that can significantly improve farming.
“The training has equipped us with skills to do modern farming at a low cost using the internet,” Kapson said.
The district hopes that the digital skilling initiative will boost agricultural productivity, promote innovation, and enable farmers in Nyabihoko to competently face emerging challenges in the agricultural sector.
