Ugandans Urged to Embrace Joint Efforts in Fight Against HIV/AIDS
By Anthony Kushaba – Ntungamo
Health stakeholders in Ntungamo District have called for increased joint efforts in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS, citing growing concern over rising infections, especially among married couples and in rural communities.
The call was made on Tuesday afternoon by Nesterio Twesigye, the Ntungamo District Health Educator, during orientation of district HIV/AIDS champions, held at the Ntungamo District boardroom which brought together journalists, politicians, members of the business community, and local communicators.
Twesigye emphasized the importance of collaborative community engagement and increased sensitization, noting that isolated efforts are insufficient to tackle the persistent threat of the virus.
Catherine Tibimpama, a Village Health Team (VHT) member from Ruguma Village in Kikoni Parish, Ntungamo Sub- County, warned that many people are still not taking HIV testing seriously. "The threat is real, and unless communities change their attitude, the situation will only worsen,” she said.
Sanny Tibikanya, a resident of Rwamabondo Town Council who uses a megaphone for community sensitization, echoed the concerns. "HIV is still a serious threat, and its prevention should be everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
Jinniffer Sentongo Nalongo, a councillor and resident of Muko Ward in Ntungamo Municipality, pointed out that HIV is becoming increasingly prevalent among married couples, which poses a growing challenge for families and the wider community.
The training aimed to equip stakeholders with the knowledge and tools to effectively engage their communities and encourage behavioral change, especially regarding testing, treatment adherence, and stigma reduction.
